ANNUAL ACTION PLAN 2009

AREAS:

COMMERCIAL AREA: Action plan to increase traffic and develop new markets.

R&D / INNOVATION: Action plan to achieve integration between the port and international research agents and develop new areas in relation to the environment and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

COMMUNICATION AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Action plan to reinforce effective community and the development of the social and cultural plan.

COMMERCIAL PLAN

The commercial plan for 2009 has three clear specific aims:

  • Port relations.
  • Freight shipping.
  • Cruise shipping: holidays and passenger ferries.

Each of these aims is essential to the smooth-running of the Port of Alicante.

Port Relations

AIMS:

  • Support competitive improvements and efficiency in the services offered by the Port and its operators.
  • Foster and regulate relations between all institutional bodies and the Port, with a view to creating a joint offer. These bodies are: Alicante Port Authority, Local Councils, Provincial Council, Chambers of Commerce and representatives of different industrial/business associations.

ACTIONS:

  • Prepare the annual schedule of meetings with port operators.
  • Define the procedure to communicate with institutional bodies.

Freight Shipping

AIMS:

  • Consolidation of Tram lines, both liquid and solid bulk, and general freight.
  • Maintenance and improvement of regular lines established in Alicante with the Canary Islands.
  • Maintenance and consolidation of wind energy traffic.
  • Strengthen the Port of Alicante as a feeder port in the Mediterranean.
  • Foster and maintain reefer traffic.
  • Recuperate and consolidate traffic and regular lines with the Balearic Islands.

ACTIONS:

  • Action plan for new emerging traffic.
  • Action plan for new markets such as North Africa and the Orient.
  • Marketing plan to promote SSS (Short Sea Shipping).
  • Plan for commercial missions in the province and various ports around the Mediterranean, in collaboration with different consulates and Ivex/Icex commercial offices.
  • Initiate contact with China Shipping, Hanjing Shipping, Happag Lloyd, Arkas, Grimaldi,..etc.

Cruise Shipping

AIMS:

  • Consolidation of current cruise lines.
  • Engagement of new cruise lines.
  • Become the Base Port for cruise lines in Alicante 2009.
  • Organise the Med SeaTrade Cruise Industry International Exhibition in Alicante for 2012.

ACTIONS:

  • Implement the Commercial Plan for Cruise Shipping 2010-2011.
  • Schedule of visits to the world’s leading cruise lines with traffic in the Mediterranean.
  • Meeting in Miami with the management of the Med SeaTrade to plan the exhibition in Alicante.

R&D / INNOVATION PLAN

AIM:

Secure the Alicante Port Authority’s position as a point of reference in terms of R&D and Innovation.

FOCAL POINTS:

  • Maximum Commercial Efficacy in Port Operations.
  • Maximum Efficiency in Port Management.
  • Support for Environmental Development.
  • Driving Force for Social Responsibility in the Port.

Maximum Commercial Efficacy in Port Operations:

  • Supporting the analysis of future areas of commercialisation for the Port.
  • Analysis of freight traffic at a national level to avoid a decline in activity and support the opening of new flows.
  • Proposals for “Commercial Packages” to boost activity (E.g. Studies for recreational cruise packages to develop cruise shipping and encourage provincial tourism, etc.)
  • Participation in national and international research programmes:
  • European research project: PORTA (with Feports)
  • European research project: TIMI

Maximum Efficiency in Port Management:

  • Support the development of the Port Services Portal: All port services must be available through electronic channels.
  • Analysis of tools to foster optimisation in management and the consequent reduction in costs.
  • Study the RFID project to control port access, and movements of people, vehicles, freights and vessels in real time.

Participation in national and international research programmes:

  • AVANZA Project: fostering E-administration.
  • European research project: E-administration implementation and dissemination.

Support for Environmental Development:

  • Support the development of the port’s environmental plan 2009-20013.
  • Analyse the possibility of setting up a research centre within the Alicante Port Authority.
  • Participation in national and international research programmes:
    • EGNOS project: analysing satellite images of coastal zones.
    • LIFE + project: energy self-efficiency.
    • Project: INTELLIGENT ENERGY OR INTERREG MED IVB ATLANTIC AREA: MAX-MEP
    • Additional projects relating to: water treatment and control.

Driving Force for Social Responsibility in the Port:

  • Foster the development of projects that, by reusing the Port’s existing resources, create benefits for citizens.
  • Analyse the implementation of public Wi-Fi Access in the Port area.
  • Study the creation of a cycle lane in the port.

Participation in national and international research programmes:

  • Project: impact on Port-City relations through port activities.
  • OVSI project: development of technologies through themed talks.

COMMUNICATION

The communication processes led by the Fundación Puerto Alicante (FPA) can be broken down into: Internal Communication (IC) actions on the one hand and External Communication (EC) actions on the other.

The Alicante Port Authority’s Press Office will work in coordination with the management of the Alicante Port Authority to achieve the following targets:

  • Internal Communication Targets.
  • External Communication Targets.

Internal Communication Targets

  • Strengthen relations between members of the Alicante Port Authority and the rest of the port community.
  • Promote transversal and bi-directional communication.
  • Unify messages.
  • Improve internal working atmosphere.
  • Perception of belonging to the organisation.

Tools

  • Press pack. Internal distribution of summarised news items relating to activity in the Port of Alicante in the daily and industry press.
  • Multimedia tool on the Foundation’s new webpage. Creation of opinion and training blogs, as well as a mailbox for suggestions, notice board and e-administration.

External Communication Targets

  • Enhance and strengthen the reputation of the Port of Alicante.
  • Support and publicise corporate, commercial and social actions carried out by the Port of Alicante.
  • Convey the Port’s aims to trustees and the rest of the business sector, as well as possible port-company synergies at a geostrategic import/export and logistical level.
  • Strengthen media relations.
  • Media control, monitoring and analysis.
  • Drawing up communication strategies.
  • Coverage and dissemination of significant events in potential market niches.
  • Transmit and convey the benefits generated by the Port in the city.

Tools

  • Press Office. Drafting communiqués, media relations and information analysis.
  • Drafting opinion surveys.
  • Draw up a publicity plan in local, provincial, national and international media.
  • Agreement with Efe Agency.
  • Creation of audiovisual and promotional material to strengthen commercial actions.
  • Creation of a magazine for the Port of Alicante.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

CSR is our ongoing commitment to conduct our business ethically and contribute to economic development as we help to improve quality of life for the community and society as a whole.

To fulfil this commitment, we will develop our action plan in relation to the following areas:

Institutional Relations

Aims

  • Create bonds and joint programmes between the Alicante Port Authority and public/private institutions.
  • Promotion and monitoring of logistical developments.

Actions

Q1 2009:

  • Meeting with AENA: search for intermodal synergies.
  • Agreement with Alicante City Council.
  • Meetings with the University of Alicante and Miguel Hernandez University.

Q2 2009:

  • Meeting with COEPA: Collaboration for international Import/Export commerce.
  • Agreement with the Provincial Tourist Board, Elche City Council, Benidorm, Novelda.
  • Meetings scheduled with the Valencian Regional Government, for the coordination of agreements and events.
  • Actions to monitor the logistics platform of Alicante and the Region.

Q3 2009:

  • Chamber of Commerce: Meetings scheduled with various commissions.
  • Meetings scheduled with the Foundations OVSI, FEPORTS.

Q4 2009:

  • Agreement with the Local Councils of Villena, Orihuela, Cox.
  • Actions to monitor the logistics platform of Alicante and the Region.

Socio-Cultural Area

Aims

  • Promotion of the Port through events and publications.
  • Coordination of events and sponsorships in social, cultural and sporting areas.
  • Establishment of agreements with private and public entities to develop cultural and sporting activities.
  • Foster the relationship between the Port and Hogueras Federation.
  • Support and sponsorship of the Port of Alicante Rowing and Athletics Club.
  • Support of events for disabled individuals.
  • Preparation of proposals for possible sponsorships of regional events.
  • Proposal for the creation of a Children’s Play Centre.
  • Foster collaboration with the Spanish Red Cross and Civil Protection.

Actions

Q1 2009:

  • Agreements: with the Hogueras Federation (MARCH).
  • Exhibitions: Real Madrid Museum (MARCH).
  • Talks: school pupils meet sports personalities Iván Pedroso and Javier Sotomayor (MARCH).

Q2 2009:

  • Agreements: CAIXA, BANCAJA, BBVA, RURALCAJA, CAJA MURCIA, BARCLAYS, FUNDACION ALIÓ, FUNDACION MIGUEL HERNANDEZ.
  • Cataloguing and classification of the port archive: heritage of the future Library/Museum.
  • Creation of a Pack for Cruise Passengers: documents promoting the province.
  • Gastronomic Competition: Port Rice (JUNE).
  • Event: “100 hours of astronomy”: Commemoration of Galileo (from 2nd to 5th APRIL) and Port Gala: parade of contestants in the bellea del foc festival (24th and 25th APRIL).
  • Exhibitions: “A Sea of Art” (MAY).
  • Sporting Event: 3X3 with Lucentum (MAY).
  • Course: “Environmental Law”: Professor Gabriel del Real (APRIL).

Q3 2009:

  • Agreements: CAM, IBERDROLA, FUNDACION MANUEL PELAEZ.
  • Sporting Event: Swimming race around the breakwater (JULY) and 3X3 with Hercules (SEPTEMBER).
  • Seminar: Jorge Juan (JULY).
  • Act: Promotion of Helmet Use. Association of People with Spinal Cord Injuries (JULY).
  • II Seminar on “Environmental Law in European Ports” by Professor Gabriel del Real (SEPTEMBER).
  • Book publication: “Alicante: Un Puerto, una Ciudad” Sergio Campos (SEPTEMBER).

Q4 2009:

  • Prizes: 1st edition of the Faro Awards: Prize for: Commercial Activity, Most Important Port Maritime Initiative, Port Community and Logistics, and Personalities of the Year (DECEMBER).
  • Sporting Event: Port of Alicante Half-Marathon (OCTOBER).
  • Exhibition: War Peace: models (DECEMBER).
  • Cultural Event: Alicante Port Foundation Jazz Festival (OCTOBER).
  • Book publication: “Hogueras y Puerto”: José Manuel Lledó (DECEMBER) and “Del Puerto a la Mesa” (DECEMBER).
  • Seminars: II Seminar on “Rethinking the Port: the Port in the Arts”, by Professor Gabriel del Real (OCTOBER).
  • Logistics Seminars: (SEPTEMBER).
